90s Jeans

Fashion right now is pretty interesting. It occurred to me when I was at the Melrose Trading Post that the style seems to be as if the 90s and 2000s had a baby, but that baby had 70s highlights in their hair. The style of jeans is definitely reminiscent of the 90s. It feels straight out of an early episode of Friends or Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Occasionally, I see wide leg jeans, but those feel much more from the 70s than any other decade. Even my dad mentioned that the denim jumpsuit he saw at the Anthropologie my mom and I dragged him through reminded him of the 70s. Tops are reminding me a lot of the 2000s. Cutesy cropped t-shirts and tank tops in pastel hues remind me of the bubblegum pop style of the times à la Paris Hilton and Amanda Bynes. Part of me wonders if this time traveling in fashion is due to some underlying desire for the technologically simpler life of those times amidst this day and age where we spend our entire days in front of screens.

In this week’s look, I’ve styled some 90s jeans with one of my trusty bodysuits. I have always loved this bodysuit because of the thick fabric and off the shoulder look. Unfortunately, the buttons in the crotch don’t stay snapped, so I don’t wear it as often as I would like to. While tops are always easier to find, I believe that the search for jeans is never ending. I own a pair of Levi’s 509s, but they were at the tailor getting hemmed. Instead, I opted for my Everlane jeans for this shoot, which are not only sold at a great price, but are also crazy comfy. I tried on a pair at their store in Venice to find my right size before promptly ordering another pair online in each color available! What I have always loved about a jeans and t-shirt looks is that they really can suit most of your social engagements. Paired with black leather booties and my black clutch, this is perfect for trivia night at the bar or even date night if you aren’t doing anything especially fancy. Ditch my Bottega Veneta clutch dupe for your everyday purse and you can definitely grab lunch with your friends or do some Saturday afternoon shopping. Even swapping the booties out for heels would elevate the look for dinner at a friend’s place.

I have mixed feelings on this resurgence of the 90s. I’m loving the looser jeans and flannels. Mixing grunge and preppy has been a lot of fun! While I may have bought enough 90s style jeans to last me a while, I’m unsure of how many other trends for the coming decade I will be participating in, for I am having a harder time finding myself in this decade’s style. Now that I am no longer in high school, I do not feel the same pressure to look trendy. Instead, I buy clothes for no other reason than the fact that I like them. I especially am in the habit of buying high quality staples, that I know will last a lifetime, and styling them for whatever the times may suggest. For example, my trusty white button up looks chic and updated with my black 90s jeans and a pair of slides. As much as this Y2K resurgence is truly going back to the fashion roots of my childhood, part of me also wants to keep it in my childhood. I want to look my age. I don’t want to look like a fifteen year old girl in high school. I want to look like a young woman entering the professional world. I take a great deal of fashion inspiration from Morgan Stewart, for she always looks chic and pulled together. Being that I am more part of her generation than the 13 year olds of today, I plan on trying to capture how her style is timeless yet somehow current with the vibes of today. I’ll be working on that for the next few months!

xx
